I'm watching all my old helmet cam footage from Jericho right now...so it's kind of like I'm there.

Well, it was definitely a day for 4 wheel drive quads up at Jericho Lake. Lots of heavy snow...like mashed potatos. If I told you which quads fared the best, or worst, you just wouldn't believe me, so stay tuned for feedback from 1badbanshee either tomorrow night or Sunday morning. I was shocked...and somewhat disappointed.
2010 Honda Rincon, Red, Bone Stock
2005 Suzuki King Quad, Yellow, also bone stock.

This is why one must remove stock tires before even bringing the new quad home from the dealership! How about some pics?

Funny you should say that. Here is what happened. The best quads out there in the snow today were the stock-tires Rincon and King Quad, followed by the Grizzly 660 with Kenda Executioners. The Rancher 350 with worn stockers didn't get stuck but once, but that was because he was smart enough to stay on the hard pack. The one time he did get stuck was on a hill that was conquered only by the Rincon....twice.
The big shocker of the day was the poor performance of the Renegade X, Simply couldn't believe how poorly it fared in the deep stuff. I was at a loss at first to explain this, as was 1badbanshee, but after studying the scenario, it came down to the tires, and Visco-Lock.
The Gade has 25 inch Executioners mounted on Vision Alloys. Looks mean as hell. I'm really hoping I got an account of this on the helmetcam, but if I didn't you'll have to take 1bad's and my word for it. It was like clockwork. The Gade would start to sink a little in the snow. 3 wheels would start to spin, and you could watch the revolutions.....1,2,3,4,5 before Visco would engage. By then, the Gade was sitting on its frame from the Executioners digging their way to China in the deep heavy snow. It was funny watching the fourth tire catch up with the other three once Visco finally engaged. Now you try to push/lift/dig to get it out. What happens? 1,2,3,4,5, Visco Lock. Back in China! Thank Christ the Gade had a winch. It saw a ton of use.
In this particular case, a less agressive tire was definitely preferred, as they didn't dig instant trenches wherever they went. The Grizzly had the same tires, but the saving grace there was being able to throw the locker on BEFORE the ship sunk, so it fared much better than the Gade.
THIS IS NOT A BASH POST! For the first time ever, I was was looking forward to chasing someone else around, instead of leading, especially since I have the helmetcam and all. As you can see in my prior post, I thought I was "toast" and would be trying to keep up with the Gade X all day. He was always right behind me, but said he had to push pretty hard to stay there. I think those Executioners really sap the power from the Gade, cuz I still say with the Stock Holeshots, he would have kicked my azz all day.
Before someone makes a three wheel drive Honda comment, I'll tell you how I over came that disadvantage. If you know when to stab the front brake, you can make both front wheels pull for a period of time. I think Rincon-Newby has explained this before. The King Quad fares equally well with its stock tires. Only time it got stuck was when climbing the aforementioned hill, its tires fell into the holes dug by the Gade and the Rancher. After backing down and taking a few more shots at the chewed up hillside, it made it up.
30, I have 32Gigs of video from 2 cams to sort through. Give that some time. I do have some pics taken by 1bads's girlfriend Ashley that I can post.
I did get the Rincon stuck, by the way...once, but good. I wanted to turn around and went wide off the trail into thigh deep snow. Stepped off the quad, and just kept sinking...LOL. There's a pic here.

Although i avoid mud and sloppy stuff at all costs, I remember complaining about getting stuck a little to easily when i had my Renegade. Just had the stock holeshots on mine and found it didnt take much to bury it to the frame, guess its just not designed for that. I'm sure tires would help sowewhat but as CC stated the visco lock kicks in too late. At least it does kick in eventually, unlike some Rincons i know! lol CC put a 2" lift on that quad and some real tires and SS rims.

Oh yeah, I buried it good once myself.

This happened A LOT!!

Stuck again. I made this hill twice with the Rincon, three times if you count the time I went up to help get the Gade out.

If I trick anything out, it'll be the King Quad. Considering a Gade and Outty are virtual twins in the chassis, suspension, and driveline departments, wouldn't they avt the same? I really think if the Gade had a regular locker with a switch, much headache and winching would have been avoided.
Oh yeah, 1bad's Grizzly snapped a tie rod several miles from anywhere. I dragged him back to civilization backwards with the King Quad. The dealer where we parked is great. They customized a temporary replacement in about an hour, and had us back riding.
