I think people (everyone in general, not just on this forum) get too carried away in either direction with everything.
There seems to be no middle ground to any "argument" only, one extreme.
Yes, we need oil. There are countless things that we use it for.
On the other hand, pointlessly killing any animal is wrong, and just stupid.
I assume these birds were not killed on purpose, so yeah, its sad, but oh well. Move on.
I am in no way a supporter or PETA or other tree huger groups, but I think if you are going to kill an animal, you better use it for something.

Of course these birds, along with the other wild life it will affect, weren't killed intentionally. It was an accident, no doubt, but could have been avoided?
Obviously we can't stop drilling, so that shouldn't be brought up or talked about, but what can they do to make it a little safer? The one thing I'm pissed about in this whole situation is that this little "mishap" made me pay more at the already too damn expensive pump!

I am not against drilling, I understand we are way too dependent on it to stop right now. But what really pisses me off is the "Drill, baby, drill" approach the ****ing conservatives have to the issue.

How the **** is camo equating the life of a bird to that of a human? If we reduce our drilling and put more effort into researching and applying alternative fuel methods, it will only save more human lives. Yes, in the short term it may be difficult (read: costly) to transfer over many of our oil dependent habits to alternative fuels, but in the long run it will only benefit us in so many ways.

And your little bit about Katrina killing more people than this spill (which I am sure you pulled out of your ass) even if it were true, this is something we could have prevented. We can't prevent a natural disaster such as Katrina. Pull your head out of your ass willie.
Stem Butt: I never said Katrina killed more people, I said Katrina killed more "birds" than this oil spill will...Is reading part of your mental aptitude? Besides, oil will be part of all our lives for many years to come, because it is so important to so many country's coffer's.Chill man, the birds will come back, they always do,even at "Bikini Atoll"

I meant to type birds, not people. Katrina did kill more people, no doubt.

Like I said earlier, I am not saying we have to stop drilling. I was merely pointing out how stupid the "Drill, baby, drill" approach to this issue is.

The reason people have that attitude is because fuel costs so much and we all feel like were getting screwed at the pump. School will let out in a couple weeks, people will start to vacation if they can afford it and the price of fuel is gonna start to climb like always but this year they are gonna use this oil spill as a reason to raise it even more than usual.

Obama said on the news this morning plug the "damn" hole, lol.

We can send people to space but we caint plug a hole in our ocean. I dont know anything about off shore drilling but damn, why caint we fix it.

I don't think fuel costs are high at all. I drive a lot, 80-100 miles per day, my business requires it. And if you compare the price of fuel to the average income here in the US, we have it much better than the rest of the world. If gasoline was cheap, there would be no reason for the average person to downgrade from a 6.0L V8 to an economical 4-cylinder (I understand many people don't have the luxury of driving economical cars, I drive a Ram 3500, I know how it is)

Here is an interesting quote from a magazine (2008).

"But by almost any measure, gasoline is still cheap. In fact, it has probably been far too cheap for far too long. The recent price increases are only beginning to reflect its real value.

When measured on an inflation-adjusted basis, the current price of gasoline is only slightly higher than it was in 1922. According to the Energy Information Administration, in 1922, gasoline cost the current-day equivalent of $3.11. Today, according to the EIA, gasoline is selling for about $3.77 per gallon, only about 20 percent more than 86 years ago.

History shows that significant declines in U.S. oil consumption occur only after prolonged periods of high prices. Over the last two decades, U.S. consumers have been spoiled by low fuel prices. And those lower prices led to a buying binge that put millions of giant SUVs, pickups, and other gas guzzlers on our roads. Today's higher prices are forcing consumers to adapt. The EIA now expects U.S. gasoline consumption to decline this year—the first drop in demand in 17 years. In April, sales of small cars in the United States were up by 17 percent over the same period a year earlier while sales of SUVs, trucks, and large cars all fell by about 30 percent."

Do I like paying more for gas? Hell no. I would love to fill our Diesel Ram for $50. But it simply isn't possible. The gas prices we have now are simply reflecting the real cost of the commodity. And higher gas prices are the only thing that will motivate the US market to purchase smaller, more economical vehicles and push the research for alternative fuels.

Bring on the hate.

Oh and as for plugging the hole, I am in full agreement with you. BP is definitely doing something very fishy in the gulf.

It goes back to what I said. If they plug it, they lose it. They figure if they can rig it to collect they'll pretty much cover all cost in this mess.

Oh and I agree about fuel prices. They went mostly unchanged for a LONG time. Ive gotten used to paying ~$2.75/gal for diesel. I wouldnt mind it staying there or floating in that area +/- $0.25.

You mean loose the the well all together and never get any oil from that pocket again, right? Then why are they planning to drill another hole to relieve the pressure if they will loose it?

In my opinion they have wasted over a month now when they should have been 300 yards away drilling another hole. Seems like a win / win on their part to stop the leak plus have another hole and end up with twice as much oil. But no, they screw around with robots and goofy contraptions.

Gas prices, I know this is a typical American attitude but here goes.

I drive a 06 F-150 5.4 auto 4x4 gas guzzlin pig, 30 min drive to work, tank a week more or less if I dont run around a lot on the weekend. When fuel prices hit 4.00 in 08, I was spending a little over 400.00 a month on fuel when usually its around 300.00 give or take. I put all my fuel on a card and pay it off every month so I see to the penny what I spend and it p!sses me off cuz the payment on the truck is 403.00. Time ya add insurance its costing me close to a grand a month, 12,000 a year to drive that truck, crazy I tell ya and since I caint reduce anything else fuel is all I got to ***** about.

Yes we got it good here in America compared to other countries and compared to some incomes. But ya know what, if the world is gonna use America as the world police then why caint we at least have cheap gas and remember our tax dollars pay for that war machine. So no I dont feel guilty about having cheaper gas. Around here its 2.89 was 2.99 week before last and was amazed at 2.55 in Pigeon Forge, TN last week.

When you take into consideration that the White House gave BP an exemption for
replacing blow-out preventers in April, 2009 (and indeed, this very preventer was due for replacement), this whole oil spill tragedy falls squarely on the current Administration's shoulders. Of course, it should be known that BP was a
big contributor to the Obama campaign in 2008.

Calling a illegal immigrant an "undocumented worker" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmicist". Both are criminals!

Arent they gonna have to start over anyway, ya think whatever happened on the ocean floor can be repaired and make it a profitable hole again?
Sounded like that were gonna try and pump it full of mud and concrete on the news this morning. Wouldnt that mean the end for that hole if it works?

Can they really suck oil out of the water and it be usefull, the water dosent delute or mess it up in any way?
